The BFSG Is Coming – But You Don’t Have to Face It Alone

A new law is coming into effect—and it’s a big one for anyone running an online shop in Germany. From June 28, 2025, the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) will require B2C webshops to be accessible to all users, including people with disabilities. That means better navigation, clear structure, helpful alt texts, and compatibility with assistive technologies. It might initially sound overwhelming, but the good news is that you’re not starting from scratch. And if you’re already using loadbee, you may be further along than you think.

What the BFSG Actually Means

The BFSG brings Germany in line with the EU Accessibility Act, setting clear expectations for how digital products and services should work for everyone. Specifically, it applies to most online shops that sell directly to consumers.

Unless you’re a micro-business (under 10 employees and less than €2 million in annual revenue), your product content needs to meet standards like WCAG 2.1 Level AA and EN 301 549. In practical terms, this includes:

  • Making sure users can navigate your product pages with a keyboard
  • Providing meaningful descriptions (alt texts) for product images
  • Ensuring readable color contrasts and accessible form fields
  • Supporting screen readers and other assistive tools

Of course, meeting the BFSG requirements is essential to avoid penalties. But it’s also about much more than compliance. A more accessible online shop means a better experience for all users. It shows that your brand values inclusion, clarity, and ease of use. And it can open your shop to millions of people across Europe who rely on accessible design every day. At loadbee, we believe accessibility isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a smart step forward.

How loadbee Supports You—Today and Tomorrow

We’ve already taken the necessary steps to help our partners meet accessibility expectations:

  • Our standard layouts follow a clear content structure that improves readability
  • We’ve implemented strong color contrasts and offer a grayscale viewing option
  • Brands can add alt texts to product images via their data feed
  • Our reference layout has achieved an Accessibility Score of 99/100 in Google Lighthouse testing
  • And we continuously optimize based on feedback and evolving best practices

These features are part of our platform by default, so you can deliver accessible product content across your retailer network without starting from zero.

For custom layouts, accessibility implementation depends on your design and development teams, but our structure is already set up to support it.

Let’s Make Accessibility Part of Your Brand Standard

The BFSG is a significant change, but also a chance to build something better. Accessible design doesn’t just help individual users—it strengthens your entire digital presence. And when your product content is easy to read, understand, and interact with, it builds trust.

At loadbee, we’re here to support that journey.
